Spring Recital Ballet & Class Demonstrations

Douglas Morrisson Theatre | HAYWARD, CA

May 4, 2025

Directed & Choreographed by: Theresa Knudson

WELCOME

Welcome to BlackBox Studios’ 5th recital! Thank you for supporting your dancer in their artistic pursuits. Performing is such an important way to share what the students have been learning in classes. I thank you for being here to share in the triumphs of their efforts, to celebrate how far they come, and to partake in the joy, imagination, and risk of the live performing arts! Thank you for giving your child the gift of dance. The dedication, resilience, vulnerability, teamwork, and creativity learned along the way are not just dance skills, but life skills. Thank you!

THE HISTORY of Rodeo

The original ballet Rodeo, was choreographed by Agnes de Mille for the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo, with a musical score commissioned for the ballet by composer Aaron Copland. The ballet premiered in New York City in 1942 with Agnes de Mille performing the title role. The ballet was well received and went on to have a successful tour. Agnes de Mille went on to choreograph legendary Broadway musicals like Oklahoma!, Brigadoon, and Carousel. In this reimagined version choreographed by Theresa on the students of BlackBox Studios, you will experience two music excerpts from the score: Buckaroo Holiday and Hoe-Down, with the characters ranging from Cowgirls, Horses, and Chickens. Pictured in black in white is Agnes de Mille in her ballet, Rodeo, photographed by Maurice Seymour.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE TODAY

The students of BlackBox Studios will present Class Demonstrations to demonstrate skills they have been working on in technique classes. We will then take a brief 10 minute intermission. The program will conclude with Rodeo Ballet, a new ballet, choreographed on the dancers of the studio by Theresa Knudson.
