BlackBox Studios offers ballet classes for students ages 3 to Adult. Classes offered include: Pre-Ballet, Youth Ballet for kids ages 5 and up, Beginner Adult Ballet, Advanced Adult Ballet, Pre-Pointe, Pointe, and all levels of Contemporary Dance ages 3 to Adult.

Youth Division Classes

  • Pre-Ballet I Ages 3-5

    Pre-Ballet I is designed for young children ages 3-5. The class introduces students to the art form of ballet. Students will learn basic ballet steps and positions, studio etiquette, and appreciation for music and movement!

  • Pre Ballet II Ages 4-6

    Pre-Ballet II is designed for young children ages 4-6. Students ages 4 must take a placement class in Pre-Ballet 1 prior to joining Pre-Ballet II. The class introduces students to the art form of ballet. Students will learn basic ballet steps and positions, studio etiquette, and appreciation for music and movement!

  • Basic Ballet I Ages 5-7

    Basic Ballet is designed for young children ages 5-7. Students ages 5 must take placement class in Pre-Ballet II prior to joining Basic Ballet.

    The class is an introduction to the art form of ballet. Students will learn basic ballet steps and positions, studio etiquette, and appreciation for music and movement! Students will be introduced to basic barre work in this level.

  • Basic Ballet II/Youth Ballet I Ages 7-11

    Youth Ballet is designed for students ages 8-10. Students will learn the basics of a classical ballet class starting at the barre, moving to center, and finishing with traveling combinations across the floor. This class will focus on building ballet movement vocabulary while refining the technical precision and form of the basic positions and movements. Proper alignment and etiquette, along with musicality and expression are integral to the training in this course. This class is intended to be a transition from Basic Ballet into Youth Ballet. Students may also take Basic Ballet I classes to supplement training until teacher’s approval to start adding Youth Ballet II classes, before fully transitioning to Youth Ballet II.

  • Youth Ballet II Ages 9-14

    Youth Ballet II is designed for students ages 9-14. Students will take a classical ballet class starting at the barre, moving to center, and finishing with traveling combinations across the floor. This class will focus on building ballet movement vocabulary while refining the technical precision and form of the basic positions and movements. Proper alignment and etiquette, along with musicality and expression are integral to the training in this course. Youth Ballet II students are offered Pre-Pointe Class on Wednesdays to take in addition to their Tuesday and Thursday technique classes.

  • Youth Ballet II Pre-Pointe Ages 9-14

    This class is focused on pre-pointe, and will start with conditioning (theraband exercises, stabilizing exercises, core strength, etc.), and then go onto the barre focusing on footwork exercises needed to prepare for pointe work in the future. Having a strong foundation is best to prepare for pointe and avoid injuries. Students must be approved in order to go en pointe. Approval happens after they can complete certain strength and coordination tasks and have reached the ages of at least 11 or 12 for developmental purposes, and are taking regular classes. All of this to make sure students are able to train en pointe in a safe and productive way.

    Pre-pointe class is different in that it focuses on the lower body in preparation for pointe shoes. Students must also be enrolled in BOTH Tue & Thur classes to enroll in Wednesday Pre-Pointe)

  • Creative Movement Ages 3-6

    Creative Movement is designed for children ages 3-6. The class is an introduction to the art form of modern dance. Students will learn coordination, music appreciation, studio etiquette, and basic modern & contemporary dance steps and positions. This course introduces students to elements of floor work.

  • Basic Contemporary Ages 6-8

    Basic Contemporary is designed for young children ages 6-8. The class is an introduction to the art form of contemporary and modern dance. Students will learn basic modern steps and positions, studio etiquette, and appreciation for music and movement! Students will also be introduced to floor work and improv.

  • Youth Contemporary Ages 9-14

    Youth Contemporary is designed for students ages 9-14. Students will partake in a contemporary and modern dance class starting with a technical center warm up and finishing with traveling combinations across the floor. This class will focus on building movement vocabulary while refining the technical precision and form of the basic positions and movements. Proper alignment and etiquette, along with musicality and expression are integral to the training in this course. Class includes floor work, partnering, and improvisational techniques.

Adult/Teen Division Classes

  • Int/Adv Ballet to Pop & Alternative Music

    Ballet to Pop Music is intended for adults and teens with intermediate or advanced technique. Class is instructed as a classical ballet class, however music is pop, rock, alternative to traditional ballet class piano music. Class can be taken in person or on Zoom.

  • Beginner Adult Ballet

    Intro/beg class is designed for adult and teen students who are brand new to ballet as well as students who are returning to ballet, or want to brush up on basics. Class entails a classical ballet barre and center. Modifications are given to students who need them in order to make this class accessible and challenging. Class can be taken in person or on Zoom.

    Wednesdays 6:35-7:35pm In person & ZOOM

  • Intermediate Adult Pointe

    Intermediate Pointe is designed for adult and teen students who have an intermediate or advanced level of ballet technique. Modifications are given to students based on where they are in their training in order to make this class accessible and challenging. Class can be taken in person or on Zoom. All gender identities are welcome!

  • Beginner Adult Contemporary Dance

    Students will partake in a contemporary and modern dance class starting with a technical center warm up and finishing with traveling combinations across the floor. This class will focus on building movement vocabulary while refining the technical precision and form of the basic positions and movements. Proper alignment, along with musicality and expression are integral to the training in this course. Class includes floor work, partnering, and improvisational techniques. Modifications are given to students who need them in order to make this class accessible and challenging for everyone present.
